They are chemical compounds with amphiphilic properties, i.e. in their molecules they have parts of both hydrophilic (attracting water and repelling fats) and lipophilic character (liking oil), they are most commonly fatty acid esters, repel water and bind with fats. Micelles therefore "attract" and absorb fat in the form of excess sebum or waterproof make-up, and dissolve other impurities in aqueous solution.
